As the ridge finally breaks down, we may begin to glimpse a more permanent seasonal set up for the tropics. Last year I observed the overall seasonal set-up begin in early July. At that time I noticed that the Bermuda Ridge was not as strong as in '07 when powerful hurricanes were held further south in the Carribean. Last year's situation showed a break down of the ridge in the Atlantic, but with a disconnected part of high pressure centered over Fl. So at times storms stayed east of Fl moving between the two areas of high pressure, but for major storms like Gustav and Ike were forced west of the smaller pocket of high pressure over Fl, then around it toward the north central and north west Gulf coast (Gustav and Ike). So I'll be looking at the set up that emerges after the breakdown of the high.
