Luckily the nearest populated area is about 50 miles away. Where the epicenter of today's quake was is one of the most beautiful places in the world. In 1999 I visited and was within about 50 miles from where today's quake happened. I didn't realize that part of New Zealand was that seismically active. I thought it was mostly the North Island that was so active, not the South Island in Southland. Maybe this is rather unusual for them.

I visited a volcano that was no longer active when I was there and saw some areas that were like Yellowstone, but they were on the North Island. Queenstown, about 115 miles from the epicenter on the South Island, is a beautiful town. If I had to pick from a list of my favorite towns in the world, it would probably be second on my list.

I took this picture 10 years ago from about 50 to 60 miles from where today's epicenter was. (I can't remember which of two lakes this is) This is about where the closest populated area is:

More pictures from my 1999 trip.
