As a kid, the story of the Krakatoa Eruption in 1883 was a subject of neverending fascination for me. The tsunami (used to call them tidal waves), the effect around the world on tides and sunsets by the eruption, and also, the reports about the actual sound vibrations put out by the eruption. I read then that the sound was heard over 3,000 miles away (is this still accepted?) It was called the loudest sound ever reported in modern times.
