It would be useful for the US to maintain the manufacturing talent required to build these high tech satellites. These projects in many ways strengthen the defense capabilities of the US as a nation.
Our work on satellites that monitor Earth also allow us to explore other worlds so that we may play a part in the development or use of those worlds by man.
And there is the human cost....
People deserve good forecasts so they may have the hours needed to escape the larger squalls of more intense hurricanes over warmer GOM SST's.
At a time when storm intensities are forecast to increase, an extra day of tropical storm history data may provide the extra hour of hurricane warning needed before an evacuation bridge washes out.
