MANILA, Philippines - Eight ash explosions have been recorded in Mayon Volcano in the past 24 hours, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) said Thursday.

The Phivolcs said the last ash explosion, which measured at least 270 meters from the volcano's summit, was recorded at 6:27 a.m. Thursday.

It said lava continued to flow from the volcano. It added that the lava flow has now reached 1.5 kilometers downslope from the crater since Alert Level 3 was raised on Monday night.

The Phivolcs said the volcano's sulfur dioxide emission has also dramatically increased to 2,758 tons a day.

Incandescent fragments from the lava file continuously roll down along Bonga gully, located in the southeast quadrant of the volcano, which produces small pyroclastic materials along the slope.

As of noon, the provincial disaster coordinating council of Albay said it had evacuated more than 7,000 families or more than 30,000 individuals living within the 6-kilometer danger zone and the 7 to 8-kilometer extended danger zone.

A radio dzMM report said a total of 23 schools in the province have been turned into evacuation centers.

Security forces, meanwhile, have started to strictly enforce the mandatory evacuation of the residents who continue to refuse to leave their homes. Majority of the residents who have refused to leave the danger zone are farmers, reports said.

The military and the police have placed checkpoints in entry and exit points of the danger zone to avoid farmers from re-entering the danger zone for quick harvests. With reports from Jose Carretero, ABS-CBN Bicol and Alex Calda, radio dzMM
