7.0 Earthquake Brings Haiti Incalculable Death and Destruction
A 7.0 earthquake, the strongest in 200 years, rocked the island nation of Haiti. When it was over, the death toll and the extent of the damage were too great to be calculated as of yet. The world community, led by the United States, began mounting relief efforts.

U.S. dispatches disaster rescue teams
Frank Thorp, a retired rear admiral who ran the U.S. Navy's public information office until recently, said he believed his daughter-in-law was trapped in the rubble. Thorp said he was told late Tuesday that his son's wife, Jillian Thorp, 24, had used her cell phone to call for help from a Haitian Ministries mission house run by Norwich Missions based in Norwich, Conn.
