This storm system coming down the California coast is about 10 degrees Fahrenheit colder at about 20,000 feet aloft than the one on Saturday. That cold air aloft is a component of instability, and that means showers and thunderstorms are breaking out this afternoon in southwest CA. A waterspout has been sighted off San Diego. Small hail could fall; flash floods, mudslides, or debris flows are possible in the burn areas. The satellite picture (courtesy of WeatherTap.com) shows the swirling cloud pattern associated with the cold upper low.
