Re: NHC To Provide Greater Lead Time in Watches and Warnings

In general I favor this earlier posting of watches. I can often remember recent storms where the track certainty was of a very high percentage, and it seemed like ages before hurricane watches were finally posted. But I do have one reservation here. I think its fine to go ahead and post tropical storm watches and warnings and the hurricane watches on an earlier basis, but I'm not so sure about the actual hurricane warnings. If the warnings really mean what they say, that hurricane conditions are not only possible but imminent, then I think you have to make real sure that you don't cry wolf. So with improved forecasting, I would be in favor of earlier hurricane watches, but might want to keep the standard 24 hour time frame for posting the actual warning.
