TROPICAL cyclone Ului, threatening Queensland, has been downgraded to category three but is expected to re-intensify.

The Bureau of Meteorology says Cyclone Ului is about 1160km northeast of Mackay, on the central Queensland coast, and 1350km east of Cooktown about 4am (AEST) today.

"Although it has been downgraded to a three it's a high category three on the border of a four," forecaster Amber Young said.

"We are expecting it to re-intensify on Thursday night or Friday morning to a category four.

"By the time it does make landfall, we're expecting between 230 to 280 kilometres wind gusts - that's very destructive wind gusts."

The cyclone is moving slowly south but tomorrow the bureau is expecting it to turn west-southwest and begin moving closer to the Queensland coast.

It's predicted to hit the Queensland coast somewhere between Cardwell, north of Townsville, and St Lawrence, south of Mackay.

The cyclone and a high pressure system in the Tasman Sea is creating windy conditions, rough seas and dangerous surf over much of Queensland's east coastal waters.
