Weather eases as storm heads into gulf Posted 1 hour 40 minutes ago

The weather bureau says heavy rain and wind over the east of Arnhem Land will ease over the next 24 hours as ex-tropical cyclone Paul moves further into the Gulf of Carpentaria.

The low crossed into the gulf near Numbulwar last night and the bureau says it is now less likely to redevelop into a cyclone.

Forecaster Graeme King says it will make landfall again within the next 36 hours near Borroloola and Port McArthur, bringing more heavy rain to the Roper-McArthur district.

"I think at this stage it's going to cross that southern Gulf of Carpentaria coast tomorrow and it just may make a Category 1 cyclone before it does," he said.

"It's probably going to cross the Northern Territory Gulf of Carpentaria coast and weaken over the Northern Territory."

A cyclone watch continues for coastal and island communities from Cape Shield to the Queensland border, including Groote Eylandt.

A severe weather warning is still current for damaging wind gusts and heavy rainfall in the Roper-McArthur district and coastal parts of the Arnhem district.
