TRMM MAY SEE BIRTH OF AGATHA IN THE EASTERN PACIFIC
The TRMM satellite flew above an area of disturbed weather in the eastern Pacific Ocean on 28 May 2010 at 0538 UTC capturing data used in the image above. This area of disturbed weather may become AGATHA, the first named tropical cyclone of the 2010 hurricane season in the eastern Pacific Ocean. The rainfall analysis shown above used data from TRMM's Precipitation Radar (PR) and TRMM Microwave Imager (TMI) instruments and shows scattered areas of moderate to heavy convective rainfall around the low pressure center. The National Hurricane Center in Miami, Florida predicts that 90E will cause very heavy rainfall and flooding in central America even if 90E doesn't become a tropical storm.
TRMM's Precipitation Radar instrument was used to create the unique 3-D image on the right. This display shows several powerful thunderstorms in the southwestern quadrant of the low reaching to heights above 15 km (~9.32 miles).
TRMM is a joint mission between NASA and the Japanese space agency JAXA.
