The US Coast Guard should make sure reporters, prosecutors, and scientists are granted full access to all spill sites.
Eight relief wells should be drilled now (by the petroleum company with the best safety record) to make sure casing failure at any depth can be contained. This spill may have multiple ruptures now spilling oil.
Each drill rig should be held to the highest standards (with remote blowout preventer valves, etc...) to provide the best chance of sucess drilling above a troubled well.
The US Congress should buy the oil inside some large tankers empty them into the strategic reserve and fill them with skimmed spilled oil, then stick BP with the bill.
Congress should create a 200 billion dollar BP Oil Spill Clean Up And Compensation Fund to properly fund those who need help fixing the Gulf. Then stick BP with annual payments to repay the bill.
The US Government should prosecute BP to the highest level they can to make sure that no oil executives think they can do this without risking time in jail.
The US should raise safety standards for all current rigs and impose the most over powering inspectons of all oil flows near North America. The inspectors should be able to take over any well for weeks if they want, and should be able to confiscate oil to sell or put in our stategic reserve if they want, or cap the well. The inspectors should be given nearly arbitrary and subjective control so the bias is plainly in favor of safety rather than corporate profits.
IMHO, the US could be supplying the world with 25% of its oil and we would not know it because the inspectors are fully in bed with the oil corporations and the corporations lie about everything.
