On occasion troughs do erode the sub-tropical ridge and leave a weak steering flow. However, since Alex passed the base of the trough, it can no longer pull it north or northeast.

Why? The mid / upper level steering pattern is longe wave with a typical omega pattern. This builds the Central CONUS ridge and mid latitude troughs on either sides. One in the east and the other in the west. This building ridge will begin to force Alex NW and WNW as the high centers due north of the TC.
