I'm not sure I buy the notion that the stronger the storm the more poleward it goes. Stronger storms will respond more aggressively to weaknesses in the steering currents, but we've seen many monster storms move due west all the way across the basin in recent years because a powerful steering ridge was shoving them westward (Some recent examples that come to mind are Hurricanes Emily, Dean and Felix). So strong storms don't automatically move poleward just because they are strong; they need to find a weakness that allows them that escape route.
