for the old timers who tracked these systems in the 60's and earlier, well he used to say that 950 mb was the threshold for a major hurricane. That was back before the Saffir-Simpson Scale was set up. Don't get me started, but I prefer Hope's generalization. I don't like the Saffir-Simpson Scale (for various reasons). Look, you have a 950 mb  hurricane making landfall. You have to explain this to those who really don't follow hurricanes that much. Would you come down in favor of major or not??? I thought so.
