This is not the only place where I have seen this listed as a 3  at landfall on Long Island.Heck it was a few months ago when Newsday(Long Islands newspaper),had Gloria as a CAT 4 at landfall!!!!!and I would say 3/4 of Long Islanders read that paper.

I have said this before, and think I mentioned it on this board a while back. You know how the president goes on at prime time on just about every station with his state of the union or other important stuff.Well,I think every year on June 1st at 8pm,all station should do this with thier local emergency managment, state & county Officials, police, fire, etc. And explain what a hurricane is what it could do if the area was hit, show what past hurricane did,how the county is prepared for a hurricane, what to do if you are in an evacuation zone, where shelters are, evacuation routes, time needed, important numbers etc...This will get to more people then just having a little brochures with the info, that less then 5% of population knows about.

It would also  be interesting to do a pole here on Long Island with these question.I would bet now that atleast 60-70% would not know the correct answers, but if you do what I mentioned above most people would know..

Was Gloria a Major when it made lanfall on Long Island?

what/when was the last Hurricane to hit the Long Island?

When was the last Major hit for the Long Island?

Would you consider the March 13 2010 storm a hurricane?(i bet about half would say yes)

Would you stay put during a Hurricane?

Are you in an Evacuation zone?

If you were to evacuate, where would you go?what route would you take?

Do you think we can handle hurricane and come out ok?

How many days do you think we would be out of power?

Where would you go to get food water, etc?

do you have an emergency kit?
