From SHIPS text products ( ftp://ftp.tpc.ncep.noaa.gov/atcf/stext/ ):
"** 2010 ATLANTIC RI INDEX AL072010 EARL 08/31/10 00 UTC ** ( 30 KT OR MORE MAX WIND INCREASE IN NEXT 24 HR)"
And using either advisory data or best track data he did undego rapid intensification of 30 knots.
Using best track data:
8/29 18Z - 70 knots 8/30 18Z - 115 knots
45 knot change.
8/30 0Z - 80 knots 8/31 0Z - 115 knots
35 knot change.
Using advisory data:
8/29 5PM EDT - 75 knots 8/30 5PM EDT- 115 knots
40 knot change.
8/29 11PM EDT - 85 knots 8/30 11PM EDT- 115 knots
30 knot change.
As for rapid deepening:
"Rapid Deepening: A decrease in the minimum sea-level pressure of a tropical cyclone of 1.75 mb/hr or 42 mb for 24 hours." From: http://www.nhc.noaa.gov/aboutgloss.shtml
According to advisory data and best track data, no.
8/30 0Z - 972mb 8/31 0Z - 938mb
34mb change.
Advisory data is 971 mb and 938 mb.
33mb change.
According to vortex messages:
A. Time of Center Fix: 31st day of the month at 4:26:00Z H. Minimum Sea Level Pressure: 933mb (27.55 inHg)
A. Time of Center Fix: 30th day of the month at 5:00:30Z H. Minimum Sea Level Pressure: 969mb (28.61 inHg)
