Re: The Hype begins

I don't see how anyone could accuse the NHC of "too little too late" when (1) they have begged and pleaded in recent years for everyone to please not pay sole attention to the center of the track but rather look at the entire cone (and thus in fact have eliminated the center "line" in the track map graphics), (2) have repeatedly stated in discussions of Earl that tracks at days 4 and 5 are subject to significant error (hundreds of miles), and (3) are reiterating right now, as of the 11 p.m., that "THERE IS STILL CONSIDERABLE UNCERTAINTY AS TO HOW CLOSE THE HURRICANE WILL COME TO THE U.S. EAST COAST."

Any municipality that doesn't pay attention to all that has only itself to blame, not the NHC, and I agree with Beaumont that this is not hype in the least, but prudence, and with Jackstraw that to err on the side of readiness is preferable.

News organizations may be looking for ratings, but inadvertently or otherwise they provide an invaluable service to the untold numbers of people who wouldn't otherwise be aware.  (Not everyone visits HurricaneCity.com, after all, silly though they surely are for not doing so.  Ha.)
