Why do troughs overpower hurricanes?

We see it every season, or at least we look out for it whenever a 'cane threatens the mainland--will we have a trough swoop in and scoop up a storm to take it on a fishing expedition? But why exactly is it that troughs trump hurricanes? Why is it not the other way around given the awesome power of storms like Igor or Earl? It's like a game of meteorological rock/paper/scissors--the trough always wins over the 'cane; the 'cane never stalls a trough or forces it to retrograde, and given the power of some of the systems that troughs have kept away from the U.S. over the years, that would seem surprising to the uninitiated.

I'm just trying to learn here--I have always understood that troughs swat hurricanes away, but today I asked myself "why?" and I realized that didn't have a terribly informed answer--anyone?
