Keith's latest:

7.30 PM local 2230 GMT.

Hello everyone once again as reported earlier things are now starting to go downhill We have had our first band of showers go through about an hour ago. I ventured into Hamilton the capital this afternoon and by 4 pm it was basically a ghost town not many stores were still open as many stores closed early to allow their staff to tend to last minute chores in preparation for Igor tomorrow late night. Last report was the hurricane was due at 3 AM on Monday but as of Sunday early morning we will be having the beginning of the tropical force wind. The Bermuda Airport was closed this evening and will not officially open again until Tuesday after preliminary checks are completed. The last flight to leave was BA on the return trip to the UK around 5 PM. Usually this daily flight would be in and out 3 hours later but because of the approach of Igor they came in 3 hours early.

The Royal Navy has a frigate with helicopter stationed off Bermuda to assist if needed after the storm has passed. Thank you for that. I don't know how far away they are but the South Shore of Bermuda is absolutely amazing no words or pictures can portray the awesome power of the waves crashing on the shore. In some places its total white out with spray etc. There is a section of the South coast road in Smiths Parish that is always swamped by the ocean in times like this. This section of road was demolished with Fabian the authorities have closed this section to all traffic until after the storm.
I must say here at this point after we had Fabian 7 years ago the next morning I went outside to survey the neighborhood etc. at that time we had no outside communication even the Government radio station had gone down during the storm. Anyway that morning after it looked like an atomic bomb had fallen no trees with leaves etc just total calm then I heard this engine noise approaching and out of nowhere a US Coast Guard plane was flying overhead so low just clearing the remaining trees. With no outside information I remember saying What the hell has happened to Bermuda. So I hope we are not in that position again this time.
Jim Cantorrie from the US cable Weather Channel is on the island broadcasting from one of our South Shore tourist hotels The Elbow Beach so if you have TWC you can see his reports there. But remember all Bermuda houses are very well constructed as I said its the possible tornadoes after the eye passes that does most of the damage.

So we are hanging in there just waiting to see and feel Igor as he approaches Bermuda between now and early Monday I hope he speeds up a little more after passing so he can be out of here quickly.

Good Evening from a tense Bermuda on this Saturday night. ..

Keith.
