Those of us on the gulf coast would certainly trade our fame for say the Georgia storm record.  From Texas to Florida every single one of us has been hit with a major is the last half decade.  Some of us two or more times.  Earl was a scare but by next year he will fade rapidly from memory.  On the entire East Coast they get hit what, once or twice a decade?  We do have interest in storms that hit Mexico or the islands as well.  Just look at the RI that Karl displayed, very few of us here expected Karl to stay a CAT 1 in the BOC.  We know and respect what a gulf storm can do in short order.

We are not Southern Snobs DM we have suffered.  These storms are not a game to us, we track them to keep our families and homes as safe as possible.  Post Katrina things have changed a lot down here.  There is plenty to still improve but the whole knowledge base has changed.  An amazing amount of folks frequent places like Hurricane City to learn more about these storms.

I wish that thousands would not have had to die in my state for that great awakeing.  Almost everybody here knows someone that was either lost to the storm or died from the trauma shortly after Katrina.  One older lady that stayed here with me after the storm died that way.  The shock just killed the older people within months of their uprooting.

We are better now though.  An amazing number of houses, Fire Departments, grocery stores, civil defense, etc., have standby generators.  They are better prepared to give aid immediately.  We are getting training, right after Katrina I went and got certified as a First Responder, now as a volunteer fireman.  We train to a very high standard, on average there is 10 hours of training offered per week in our parish for volunteers.

Our roads are better, more bridges have been connected with acess roads, our traffic plans are better.  Our police are better trained.  People gas up their cars and get kits on hand early now, I personally keep my tanks filled as well as my pantry all hurricane season.

Katrina was our 9-11 here on the gulf coast.  It changed our whole lives.
