Things were back to normal at Cambridge Beaches in Sandys Parish.

As Category 1 Hurricane Igor passed near Bermuda late Sunday night, downing palm tree branches, sweeping away storefront awnings, and knocking out power for many on the island, Brian and Elaine LaFleur of New Bedford sheltered in their hotel room.

Aside from wind and rain rattling the windows, the experience from within a hurricane was rather tame, according to the couple, who had moved up their vacation plans just so they could see the storm.

"We were ready for a little bit more excitement, but we're thankful it wasn't too exciting for the poor local people" who have to deal with any damage wrought by the storm, said Elaine, 62, in a telephone interview today from the Hamilton hotel room she shares with her 66-year-old husband.

"We looked at it as an adventure," she said.

No major damage was reported on the island as of Monday morning, the AP reported.

With Igor now steering north away from the island, swirling several hundred miles off the coast of Virginia, the pair, who have traveled to Bermuda 27 times before, said they looked forward to the rest of their week-long stay on the island, sans tropical-force winds. The sun was shining and the weather was mild this morning, Elaine said.

"It's a beautiful day," she said. "We're ready to start our vacation now. Maybe a dip in the pool."
