AlligatorPointer is correct (I'm used to calling them black flies, but they are in fact dog flies down here).
Skin-So-Soft is useless. I've been trying various things for 10 years and the only effective remedy I've found is 99% deet -- but only for a short time. Today, for example, the wind turned straight north while I was sitting, reading, in my beach chair, and within a short time I was the target of at least a half dozen angry biters. Pulled out my deet, spread some in strategic locations (mostly legs/arms), and for about the next 45 minutes the flies lit but didn't bite, so I got a few chapters read. After that I had to give up and go home -- all non-treated skin areas had been discovered, and I had tired of the battle and the bites. |
