Re: New Low Rapidly Deepening Off South Carolina Coast

Winds didn't hit 20? I have to assume you slept in this morning.

Of course this was a rain event with little wind; but as the Low center neared and passed on our left the winds cranked for little while. Wrightsville Beach NDBC station JMPN which reports every 6 minutes had 30kt+ sustained winds from 2:12am through 9:18am.

From 7:18am through 8:30am the average sustained wind was 40kts. Highest sustained wind was 44kts; and highest gust was 55kts.

The Wilmington airport is 10 miles inland; and as expected recorded noticeably lower winds. The difference was particularly pronounced because this Low had just been formed, and spent a very short time over water before making landfall in upper SC. Baby Lows can't well drag their winds inland. (The lowest pressure on the coast was merely 29.44".)

For those not already aware, the city of Wilmington is NEAR the coast but it's not ON the coast. (It's a river city, not an ocean city.)

I saw a note elsewhere from a SC beach house owner saying his "house was shaking and water was leaking in through any crack it could find." This suggests winds were even stronger on the coast south of here (where radar returns at the time were much more intense.)

Yes this was a rain event; but for what it's worth - there was a window of stiff winds along the coast; winds that were probably enhanced by a low level jet more than raw storm power; but winds nonetheless.

Not a big to-do, but the facts are what the facts are; unless one doubts NOAA reporting stations.

P.S. I was up very early, went out and enjoyed the wind (as it was here, midway between the airport and the ocean.)
