Norwegian warning

Meteorologists issue hurricane warning

Published on Tuesday, 8th March, 2011 at 10:59 by Michael Sandelson.

The Norwegian Meteorological Institute is warning people living on the western coast to stay indoors today.

"Latest measurements at Krkenes lighthouse outside Stad show storm force 10, with winds at 54 knots (approximately 27 metres per second/ 60 mph). These will be increasing to hurricane force 12 for a short period this afternoon. We expect to see winds of 33 m/s (about 73 mph)," state meteorologist Anders Sivle tells The Foreigner.

The relatively uncommon weather is caused by a low-pressure system east of Iceland, moving northwards in the Norwegian Sea.

Mr Sivle says the prospects look brighter later on.

"Winds will be decreasing from approximately 5 p.m. this evening."
