Supermoon Effects: Fact and Fiction

The Moon completes its elliptical orbit every four weeks; a fact that seems to escape those who claim a relationship between today's earthquake and the moon.

The "supermoon" may be of interest because it will be full on the day of perigee but when the quake struck, the moon was located more than half its average distance from earth - thereby eliminating any possibility of cause and effect.

The earthquake happened...well, because earthquakes happen when it's time to happen. Additionally, there is no correlation between the moon's phase and earthquakes but there is a correlation to tides; that is, subduction quakes occur most often at low tide (less weight above to hold the plate boundary together.)
