Spent Fuel Exposed

When fuel rods are not cooled properly the water around them boils away and they are partially exposed to air.

In air the rods oxidize and give off hydrogen which explodes.

There may be many years of old fuel rods exposed now that the roofs have been blown off at a few plants.

A melt down of the spent fuel might release many times more radioactive particulates than a full meltdown of each reactor core.

The spent rods are shown in the diagram on the floor just above the reactor core.

I wonder if 8 feet of granulated fluoride salt might melt and disolve/dilute any dripping molten uranium if the salt were to be placed below the rods.
