This the first picture of the giant polyester cover Japanese nuclear scientists hope will shield the doomed Fukushima reactor No.1.

Tokyo Electric Power Co. spokesman Junichi Matsumoto explains the plan to cover up the reactor building using a giant crane to lift blocks into place

The giant construction will be built by the Tokyo Electric Power Co. (TEPCO) as part of a bid to stem dangerous radiation being released into the atmosphere.

TEPCO said that it would start to build a giant cover shield around the No.1 reactor building on June 27, as a temporary measure to prevent further release of radioactive substances into the atmosphere.

Since the disaster on March 11, large amounts of radiation is thought to have contaminated the surrounding countryside and ocean.

The 8.9-magnitude earthquake which triggered the explosions struck off the coast of Honshu island on March 11 at a depth of around 24km.

The tremors caused the automatic shutdown of 11 of the Japan's nuclear power reactors, including reactor units 1,2 and 3 at the Fukushima Daiichi power plant.

Reactor units 4, 5 and 6 were undergoing routine inspections, so were not operating.

The nuclear crisis has forced forced 80,000 people who lived within 20km of the plant to leave their homes and businesses.

A wider evacuation zone was decided upon in April as radiation levels increased and about 5,000 people have been moved into public housing, hotels and other facilities in nearby cities.

In May the Japanese government agreed a huge compensation package for those affected by the disaster, and the total compensation bill could top $100bn.
