A very strong coastal earthquake struck during the morning hours at the southern coast of New Britain, Papua New Guinea. Earthquake-Report calls this earthquake very dangerous for the primitive coastal villages near the epicenter.

At this point no damage to report from Papua New Guinea. It generally takes days for damage reports to come through given the impassable distances in Papua New Guinea and lack of communications.

From CATDAT since 1900, many damaging earthquakes have occurred around the same location in the past.

In 1911 and 1933 similar location earthquakes caused damage on New Britain.
In November 1964, a Ml6.9 earthquake caused damage on New Britain at the same location.
In 1970, a shallow earthquake caused minor damage on the east coast of the Island, with a lower magnitude.

On the 31st October 2001, a Mw6.9 occurred at the same location, with minor damage in Kimbe.
The epicenter is quite close to the earthquakes of July and August last year. On that occasion the earthquakes were between 6.9 and 7.3 Mw and slight damage was caused to structures.
Most structures on New Britain in Papua New Guinea are made of traditional materials (bamboo, wood etc.) allowing for flexible movement during an earthquake. The most common loss of life from earthquakes on Papua New Guinea is from landslides and tsunamis (90%). Shaking-related deaths from building collapse and other earthquake effects have caused 10% of deaths.
