C'mon down here to SE SC.  The Savannah River Site.  Heck they take spent rods, waste from purifying Uranium and Plutonium  and  the actual cores from dismantled thermonuclear warheads (High grade Plutonium) They took soviet leftovers to make sure they didnt get into the wrong hands which is probably what they are doing with the Germans.  For 6 bucks you can go on a tour, seriously.   They'll put you on a "Disney Tram' with a radiation badge to make you feel safe and tour the facility so you can see how carefully we handle Nuclear waste, right on a river, and a major aquifer for the Carolinas and Georgia.  Clemson University has been studying the area for a long time and their findings, when you can get them, are what you would expect. The levels strontium within 60 miles of the site range from 100 to 6 times the normal level They have documented a 50% increase over estimated natural levels of mutatations in Alligators in the Bald swamp it borders.Young Bald Cypress trees have half the trunk width and 75% less root system compared to the Cypresws in the Congarree, 50 miles away on a different watershed.

I'm sure the scientists are proud and think they are doing everything they can, just like the engineers in Japan.
