We lost power with Ike, that Friday night when he hit, but were fortunate to start getting it back by Sunday night.  However, it would come and go.We would all cheer every time it came and went because that seemed to indicate that another section of town was back up and running.

Everyone in the neighborhood got to know each other real well, since we were all outside cleaning up trees that had fallen, and taking care of any damage.  We all shared our BBQ pits, and began to cook our freezer stuff after the first 24 - 36 hours.  One neighbor finally ventured out of our neighborhood in search of ice, and was so proud of himself for scoring two bags of ice!  If you have big igloo type coolers, try freezing some gallon jugs of water and those will help keep your cooler stuff good.  We had two coolers, one for the frig stuff, and one for drinks. Try not to open the food one until you have to.  We kept our freezer closed, and found that after about 36 hours, the stuff in the door had begun to thaw some (frozen veggies), but the roasts, and large pieces of meat were still frozen solid.

Batteries, batteries, batteries!  for your flashlights. We never lost our public water supply, but we weren't in a flooded part of town, we just had the wind to deal with.  Lots of downed trees, fences, damaged roofs.

It was terrifying, awesome, and amazing all at the same time.  And I was so proud of how our community came together to help each other.  The heck with waiting for FEMA, we just put on our big girl panties, and got to work.
