Two of the "breaches" the news iss referring to are actually just sand over the road. They are already cleared up. But tere are at least three places where the "breaches" are really "inlets." The water is flowing from the sound to the sea and the pavement is  gone.  Governor Purdue says minimum of two months to repair. That's about what it took to repair the new inlet after Isabel, but it was much wider and deeper than the one now. The only difference is that this one cuts off the entire island from the rest of the world and the Isabel inlet only cut off the last village down the island, Hatteras Village. I have a feeling that the powers that be will get on this one pretty quickly since it effects seven villages.

Emergency generators have been brought in on ferries and most of hte island now has temporary power. The main cables were destroyed along with the road at the breaches and will take extensive repairs. The new ferry runs are not allowing residents yet, just essential personnel and supplies so people who evacuated can not get home. Unless they know someone with a boat who will come get them somewhere on the mainland side of the sound.

My daughter is very sad that she can not get home, but I guess that's just part of choosing to live on a sandbar 30 miles out into the ocean.
