The clouds pushing downwards in the upper-left corner actually are circulating around a huge upper-level low known as a TUTT (Tropical Upper Tropospheric Trough) and appear to be directly associated with the trough currently situated over the western Atlantic. These troughs actually should aid in Katia's poleward motion as the forecast period progresses, because they will make it awfully hard for a ridge of high pressure to build in and send Katie westward.

Katia has a lot of work cut out for her if she is going to avoid becoming a fish--this TUTT, the trough off the eastern seaboard (which feels like it's been there for months), and the forecast calling for a corresponding weakness in the ridge that will steer Katia on a WNW path in the short term.
