Re: Solar Power for emergencies

I have a friend who's an extension agent and teaches contractors how to install solar panels, and I asked him about this recently.  A solar panel the size of a door will only produce around 130 watts, enough to power a couple of light bulbs.  When combined with a battery it will provide about 4 hours of use for the devices you describe, but will then take about 24 hours to recharge.  They are also expensive.  Do a search for solar generators and you'll find that a solar generator with one panel costs around $1400 and up.  They may be good if you want to go green and have very limited usage needs, but they are not a replacement for gas powered generators.
