Orrin Pilkey is probably a smart man, He has researched and written a lot about the Outer Bnaks. However...he's wrong on this stance. He belongs to the group of folks who will never be happy until Hatteras Island is a full wildlife sanctuary with little to no human footprint.

Unfortunately for Mr. Pilkey that is never going to happen. The people who are native residents of the 7 villages were there long before the National Park Service coerced them out of their family land by promising them that they (NPS) would always allow them to use the beaches as they had traditionally done and that they (NPS) would help them by catering to the tourists and changing their methods of making a living from one of commercial fishing and selfsustenece to tourism.

Does Mr. Pilkey also reccomend that people all move out of Kansas due to tornados? And out of California due to earthquakes? And on and on...

Yes, any barrier island environment is more susceptible to damage from hurricanes. But Mr. Pilkey's assertion is ridiculous.

I do agree that it is time to bridge the hot spots on the island where hwy 12 frequently washed out. And that is the current approved plan.  The current Bonner Bridge is scheduled to be replace (decades after it's useful life span expired) and smaller bridges are approved for several spots headed down the island,
