Nothing new..they get this type of weather every so often.  while I was In England, It was hit with a major wind storm in  Oct of '89 and then again in Jan '90.  It's pretty much the same type of phenomenon that occurred here on the west coast last week with winds peaking at 90 mph, the root cause was a combination of a low-pressure system that materialized over the California-Nevada border area and a zone of surface-high pressure originating in the Great Basin.
