Jim gave an excellent discussion of the influence of strong vertical shear on Debby this morning. You can watch that video here; I highly recommend it. he did a great job today: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KuyTcQjt5YM&feature=youtu.be

Secondly, the WV loops typically are the best animated illustration of what's going on at the upper levels. The current WV loop of the GoOm cleasrly depicts the ULL in the west GoM that has been shearing the living hell out of Debby the whole time, and this is the reason t-storms have been blown of fwell east of the center (asw Jim explained this morning): http://www.goes.noaa.gov/HURRLOOPS/gulfwv.html

It does appear that the ULL is trying to get out of the way, racing off to the west. For my money, the direction in which the ULL is racing may be the crystal ball with which we can anticipate Debby's future direction--I think it looks like a reasonable course for Debby to take long-term given the current set-up.
