Hurricane Iniki

As I watch another pair of tropical systems journey across the east Pacific, destined, as always, to die over cooler waters ahead, I cannot help but scratch my head over the aberration that was Hurricane Iniki. Why/how did that system survive over the same waters over which countless others choked to death? I realize 1991-94 was a particularly acute El Nino phase, but is that all there was to the Iniki story?

I was stunned to learn today, by the way,  that Hurricane Iniki initially emerged as a Cape Verde wave. Yes--it trekked all the way from Africa to Hawaii, crossing Central America on August 28 after sustaining itself as a wave across an Atlantic basin that was remarkably inhospitable for tropical development that year (1992). Even Andrew struggled mightily for much of its journey toward Florida, only amplifying as it neared the Bahamas.

The more time goes on, the more appreciation I have for just what an unusual event Hurricane Iniki really was.
