Typhoon Jelawat roars over Japan's Okinawa Island

September 29, 2012 - 12:15 AMT
PanARMENIAN.Net - Typhoon Jelawat roared over the Japanese island of Okinawa on Saturday, Sept 29, weather agencies said, the latest to hit the region in recent weeks, CNN reports.

The typhoon is expected to rake the island's east coast before making landfall in the mainland Sunday.

Jelawat is a "very strong" storm with maximum sustained winds near the center of just over 100 mph (165 km/h), the Japan Meteorological Agency said. A NASA advisory said the cyclone was comparable to a category 3 hurricane.

If it maintains its current path straight up the Ryukyu island chain, the center should roll ashore the mainland south of Osaka City in a day, the meteorological agency said.

But the cyclone has lost some of its might, and should continue weakening while moving into colder waters, said CNN meteorologist Karen Maginnis. Wind troughs out of China could divert Jelawat away from land and into the open Pacific Ocean.

This has not kept Okinawa from feeling the might of Jelawat's gusts, although there have been no reports of major damage.

"The winds are screaming through the streets," storm chaser James Reynolds said from Okinawa. "I've seen at least one window blow out."

He explained that buildings on the island are constructed to withstand the frequent Pacific typhoons. Just two weeks ago, Sanba, a category 3 storm with slightly stronger winds than Jelawat's, passed over Okinawa on its way to South Korea.

Local media reported gusts had overturned motor vehicles.

Typhoon Jelawat spares Lanyu, now heading to Japan

Residents of Lanyu, also known as Orchid Island, breathed a sigh of relief yesterday as Typhoon Jelawat picked up speed and turned east after quickly passing by the east coast.

Jelawat's approach had brought strong winds to the outlying island, with gusts reaching level 16 on the Beaufort scale. It did not cause as much damage as last month, when the island was devastated by Typhoon Tembin.

During and after Jelawat, very good video some loading problems.  These people are far more courageous than I or they are crazier than I am.  I love the part of the pigs in their pen just walking around unconcerned.

According to NDRRMC  the Very Strong Typhoon Jelawat has left one person missing in the city of  Barangay San Vicente in Sirawai, Zamboanga del Norte.  Flooding rains in the area have also caused ~4500 people to be stranded in central Visayas.  Meanwhile numerous cars and buses have also been stranded in the region due to rising flood waters. As the storm system continues to track north these rains will only continue to get worst and flooding will likely continue to increase in the coming days. Not just in Visayas but also towards Luzon as the storm tracks in the a Northerly projection.

In the long rang Southern Japan and Taiwan also need to watch this storm as it tracks North.
Below is a quick video on the storm and the most recent outlook for local areas in the Philippines.

Published on September 30, 2012 by robspeta in Featured Slider, Tropicals, Uncategorized, Video Update

Typhoon Jelawat is not over yet; the storm is blamed for at least one death and over 100 injuries. Reports of mass evacuations in Nagoya have all been seen due to flooding of the rivers in that city. Also travel concerns continue to occur. Over 500 flights have been canceled and a tree fell on Tokyo's main train line causing delays.

Now the storm is heading north but still through the overnight hours on Sunday to Monday it will be felt in Honshu and then off to the Tsunami hit regions to the North.

A very grateful thanks to everyone who supplied video in this update. You can find all there full videos in the links below.
