Is it safe to say a Nor'Easter coming in is as bad as a Hurricane

I had a discussion with a Dr. Today who thinks he knows a lot about weather lol.

Many people heard "hurricane" throughout this crisis when in fact we all know it wasn't.

So my question is

Will people let their guard down when the news reports "Nor'Easter" will slam into the east coast?  Do they know that Nor'Easters typically brush the coast and move out to sea but if they were to come into land as Sandy did, do they know it would pack a Hurricane Punch. I think not.

Are we seeing a change with Mother Nature and Global Warming.  Will it become more common for these highs to build so far North and force these storms inland in the future?
