Long Island evacuations ahead of Nor'easter

(11/07/12) WOODBURY - Officials have urged residents in low-lying areas to evacuate prior to the nor'easter that is expected to make landfall today. The evacuations include Town of Babylon residents south of Montauk Highway; Town of Islip residents in the category 1 storm surge zone; Town of Hempstead residents south of Merrick Road and Town of Oyster Bay residents in the designated "flood zone."

More shelters will be open in Nassau County this morning for residents who are being urged to evacuate flood ravaged neighborhoods.

Nassau Community College is set up to assist anyone with special needs. Those with pets can go to 241 Miller Avenue in Garden City for assistance.

An additional shelter has been opened at Levittown Memorial High School.

At 8 a.m., shelters at Plainview-Old Bethpage Middle School, Farmingdale High School, Glen Cove High School and Mineola High School will be opened.
