As a Minnesotan, this is yearly news. There are a lot of 'betting groups' that guess the date of when the ice will 'go out' at Mille Lacs. This is, however, the first time I have seen it captured on video.

As  child, I went fishing, boating, and swimming on Mille Lacs. In the winter, we drove out on the lake with our car to a fish house to fish. The house, btw, had heat and many amenities..bunk beds, place to cook etc.. In each corner was a round hole to fish out of. I have found memories of those days.

When the ice goes out, the ice can pile up 30 feet high depending on which way the wind is blowing. The sound is incredible and really is only captured a little bit on the video. And, as you have seen, it will take out buildings.  Insurance does not cover it either.

They didn't mention rivers there. Sometimes they have to dynamite ice blockages in the river so as not to hurt dams...big ones and little ones.  Ice Jams are a major problem too this time of year.  Ice jams will also cause flooding behind it.

And, both will take out docks...

It is awesome to see.  And, considering that Minnesota has over 10,000 lakes (small ponds not counted), this is happening all over. The sportsmen were not happy as Opening Day, a big $$ day, was a dud as many lakes were frozen over.

Cool story, makes me homesick.
