When I see ranges, I look at it like below average, average or above average. I wish the media wouldn't make too big of a deal over it until the numerical forecasts get better with a narrower range.

In looking at various articles about the NOAA forecast to just see how the media covers it, I found one that had an interesting part:

"Hurricane Sandy was downgraded to tropical storm status just before it made landfall in New Jersey last October. Sandy caused $50 billion in damage."

They got some of it right.
