The launch of replacement satellites, which are crucial to forecasting tornadoes and hurricanes, have been delayed. Key satellites - and their backups - that move in polar orbits over the United States could begin failing by 2014 and become irreparable by the following year unless quick action is taken to launch replacements.

In the meantime, up to 2,600 employees under the NOAA umbrella could be furloughed between now and September - during hurricane season. Thousands of positions will remain vacant.



well at least we can say we're ahead of schedule, weather satellites are failing already !
