Philippine rescuers used helicopters and bulldozers on Tuesday to reach isolated towns devastated by deadly Typhoon Utor, which left tens of thousands homeless and a trail of destruction in its wake.

Utor, considered the most powerful storm to hit the Philippines this year, has killed at least two people and left 15 others missing in the country's north, according to officials.

The typhoon brought wind gusts of 200 kilometres an hour when it made landfall before dawn on Monday.

"This was nearly as powerful as Bopha," said Mr Balido, referring to the world's deadliest typhoon last year that hit the southern Philippines in December, killing more than 1,000 people.
