It's been interesting following the activity in the Atlantic Basin this year.

By looking at LawKat's post, with 55 of the 164 years yet to go, to have no hurricanes form by today (August 19) is not all that unusual. It happens once every 3 years on average.

But, to go another two weeks without a hurricane forming, say by September 2 (Labor Day this year), that starts to get a bit unusual. That happens only twice every 15 years on average.

Also, durring these next two weeks, the number of storms present in the Atlantic Basin jumps dramatically and almost doubles on average as the peak of hurricane season begins (see chart below).

And, if by 6 weeks from now, at the end of the peak, and there's still no hurricanes, well, that has never happened execpt for the two years of 1907 and 1914 where no hurricanes formed at all, which is extremely unusal and only happens once or twice a century.
