Just A Thought . . .

One thing I appreciate about this now-historically slow hurricane season of 2013 is that it illustrates just how remarkable it is for a tropical system to successfully make the nearly 4,000-mile trek all the way across the Atlantic from the Cape Verdes to the United States. So many factors have to coincide for a system to survive the trip and, in some cases, maintain hurricane intensity most of the way. Each portion of the Atlantic the storm inhabits during its journey must present a favorable environment.

What we are seeing this season is just how unlikely a scenarios that truly is in the scheme of things, and therefore how utterly aberrant were the seasons of 2004 and 2005. This summer has given me a renewed appreciation and awe for the hysterical pace of those two unforgettable seasons. 2013 is reminding us that so much has to go right atmospherically for just one storm to make the trip, no less many in a single season.

I mean, seriously. Just look at this. Consider these seasons in the context of what we have seen thus far this year. To me, that contrast makes a stunning illustration of the history we witnessed here together those two seasons . . .
