28 years ago Hurricane Gloria Hit Long Island(the last hurricane with center to pass over Long Island).
http://www.hurricanes-blizzards-noreasters.com/HURRICANE-GLORIA.html

Was 15 at the time in 10th grade. Remember just sitting at my bedroom window watching trees sway in the wind(I know, not smart to be at window in Hurricane). Lots of trees were down on my block, had no power for a week. walked around after the storm and was in shock as to how many trees were down. At night me and a friend were bored and we did something not to bright. we were out side in the pitch black, and if we saw people walking with flashlight on we hide in a downed tree and jumped out as they passed. Only 2 groups passed scared one other just laughed. when 15 and bored you do stupid things, lol.

It hit On a Friday so when Monday came was hoping school would be closed, but unforunatly they had power so it was open. I was talking carpentry class(class was 3 periods) At begining of school year we started to build house outside the classroom. We had the frame of house up and was shocked to see it still standing when I got to school.

This was the storm that really got me into weather. I experienced hurricane Belle and The blizzard of 78. was 6 and 8 during those storms. since 78 i was always excited when storms were coming,But After gloria is when i really got interested in weather, bought lots of weather books after that.

Also Remember the next year 1986, I was so excited about Hurricane Charley possible hitting Long Island. But it passed southeast of Long Island. I may be wrong, but i do think Long Island was under a Hurricane Waring for Charley 1986. Was very Dissapointed did not get hit. had gusty winds maybe to 40-45 mph.
