Wishing for options

I wish we had the option to install RV hookups and be able to live on our gulf-front lot in a large motorhome.  Then we could just drive away to evacuate and return after the storm passed when the roads were cleared and the power & water restored.  One of those fancy motorhome buses would have been very much cheaper than building this new house.  However, some of the local wealthy residents living in McMansions would never allow such a zoning change...and in fact will not allow new construction of tiny minimalist houses.   We built the smallest house the county zoning ordinance allows which is 1000 square feet. Our house looks larger than 1000 sq ft. because of exterior decks and bump-outs for spiral stairs & elevator (we do not have a garage and simply park in the driveway). Our ground-level dwelling that was destroyed by Hurricane Dennis was significantly smaller ...  we do not need much space to be comfortable.  Our sense of space is provided by views of the enormous sky and gulf-front to horizon surrounding us.  Unfortunately, we realistically cannot afford to keep what we have as retirees and will try to sell if the real estate market recovers enough to allow us to recover our housing investment.  We owned the small dwelling that was destroyed but  now have the financial burden of a mortgage, along with the high insurance and property taxes this new house requires.  Our social security income does not support this lifestyle.
