There is some point where it is simply not worth it. I don't understand why he needed to be in that wind and then have to jump in the pool. Storm chasers must be as responsible as they can be. There will always be risks of course, but I just don't see why the risk needed to be taken here. With tornadoes, there will always be great risk but it could actually end up saving lives for that very tornado, giving people time to actually see what might be coming there way rather than viewing something on radar or a text product. But for a hurricane like this, I just don't see the benefit of going through it. To get any video, you can't go out in category five winds. (well, you shouldn't) What if where he was had actually been hit with the worst winds? (or the worst surge) Then a person becomes just another person that needs to be rescued. I don't think you need video evidence that a category five hurricane is bad, nor could you likely ever get that in real time. Plus, it's not like it can help someone to evacuate for that particular storm, or get to shelter. People know it's coming and have already make the life or death decision to either stay or evacuate. It's too late to do anything at that point.

It is important to get video for lesser categories though, because people may be on the fence about evacuating. Video of that is important so that can be played in the future for people to know that is what you might see if you stick around. I just think there are too many people going out and putting their lives on the line, even people who seem experienced, when I don't think they have fully considered whether it is worth the risk. I worry about what decisions others make, even the general public, in order to get the best shot or the public just being too stubborn to evacuate. There are a lot of storm chasers who know better than to put themselves in a category five hurricane, or even major hurricanes. Especially with the loss of chasers due to the tornado earlier this year, I wish more would think about the risk. That had real importance in getting people to evacuate and for meteorological data. I can't see it in this circumstance. All those other professions you mention do have real importance that outweigh the risk.

As for the money angle, it costs money to do what they do so they need to make money, though again in more responsible circumstances there is importance in the video.

I just can't see someone actually putting themselves in this situation...
